Description
Badwater, Death Valley. The lowest place in North America at 282 feet below sea level. If there is any water from the surrounding mountains it collects here and as it evaporates the salt on the surface sinks leaving these ridges. On years where the water level is higher, there are no ridges, but instead a light dusting of salt on a gooey mud in between the harder polygons of salt. On really dry years the salt sinks into the mud leaving dramatic 8-10 inch ridges. It dries leaving it like a pan of brownies dusted with powdered sugar, though it is hard enough to cut your ankles on the ridges if you are not careful. Here my son is taking macros of the salt crystals which form in long hairy strands.
